Top Five Dorm Move in Tips!

Congratulations! You’re getting ready to move into your freshman year dorm! This is a very exciting time for you; here are a few tips to making the move in process a little bit smoother:

  1. A doorstop! Pick up one of these and make sure it’s in a place you can easily access right when you get to your room. Being able to keep the door propped open will make trips to and from the car, the trash/recycling bins, etc. much easier.

  2. Try to know the layout of your room before you get there. Most of the time you can find floor plans of the building online, if not on your school's website. Having an idea of how big your room is, where the window is, the closets, and more will be helpful so that deciding where you want your bed, desk, dresser, etc are not rushed decisions. Additionally, if any lofting of furniture needs to be done it’s good to know ahead of time in case you need tools.

  3. Talk to your roommate beforehand. Try reaching out and asking general questions to get to know each other a bit before the beginning of the year.

  4. You don't need to bring everything all at once. Depending on how far you are traveling for college you may feel like you have to move in all in one go. For me, going to a climate that actually had seasons, I left my snow boots and jacket at home and my parents brought them to me when they visited in November. Another option is mailing clothing/other items as the need (such as weather) arises for them.

  5. Lastly, don’t stress. Everything will eventually find it’s place.

College Blogger - Kate Liang

Hi everyone!

My name is Kate Liang and I am your college blogger! All of the posts that you see about college life, will be written by me! I grew up in San Diego and went to Francis Parker High School (graduated in 2016). I attend the University of Michigan (Go Blue!) where I just finished my freshman year. I absolutely LOVE it and it was definitely the right place for me.

At the University of Michigan I am a prospective Public Health major and Environment minor. Along with academics, I am on the synchronized ice skating team for the university. The synchro team is a club sport that competes at the national level (fun fact we won the Collegiate National Championship this year). I also work for the office of undergraduate admissions as a student ambassador. Overall, I had a fantastic freshman year experience at school and I am happy to be sharing my tips in the hopes that I can be of help to you!

Our Student Success Stories - Kevin Jenkins

Kevin

Kevin Jenkins is a 2009 graduate of Poway High School who went on to attend the University of Texas at Austin. Kevin was an active member of his university playing club lacrosse for four years, as well as joining the entrepreneurs club.

Kevin recommends the University of Texas at Austin to anyone who enjoys a lively city. He mentions that his favorite part of being in Austin is the camaraderie that the city boasts. Texans love their football, and at UT Austin, alumni and community members love to support the other university sports as well.

Currently, Kevin is a Senior Financial Advisor at Dell. Dell is a large company with a progressive office in Austin. Dell often recruits out of the University of Texas and provides numerous opportunities for those who are new to the workforce to learn and grow. Kevin joined the company after graduating, and has promoted to the role he is in today. Kevin loves the flexible work life balance that Dell provides it's team members.

We enjoyed having Kevin as a student. He always put in extra effort, and managed to constantly make us smile. Kevin, We can't wait to see the great things that you do next!

Our Student Success Stories - Kathryn Klahn

Kathryn

As a student at Santa Clara University, Kathryn is involved in intramural sports and the Delta Gamma Sorority as a Finance Director.  She loved meeting new people and experiencing new things through these groups. She also joined clubs on campus and held an on campus job, which was a great way to network and enjoy her time throughout college. Outside of school, she enjoyed exploring San Francisco and all that Northern California has to offer.

We asked Kathryn what her favorite memory from Santa Clara is and she responded: “The friends I made freshman year are still my best friends today. We all live in a house together off campus. Off campus life at Santa Clara is really fun. The school is really small so you always see people you know walking to and from class. Everyone is really friendly and there's a great vibe of wanting to see your peers succeed. Santa Clara is very resourceful and located in such a great area for young professionals. I've yet to find anything about Santa Clara University that I don't love.”

Kathryn is currently a Financial Analyst at Cisco Systems. She is in a two year financial rotation program where she is able to learn different aspects of corporate finance. Kathryn was unsure what her next steps after college would be, so this internship has opened her eyes to many different options. Cisco Systems is located in Silicon Valley, and gives Kathryn a great network since it is such an established company.

Kathryn was such a joy to work with and we love seeing her succeed! Congratulations Kathryn, on your upcoming graduation, and we are excited to see what you do next!

Our Student Success Stories - Sam Ozenbaugh

Sam

As a former Poway High student, Sam attended UCSD and was a member of the Triton’s Track and Field team. He says that some of his  best friends were made from joining the team, and it has given him a great opportunity to network. Sam also participated in Cru, an on campus ministry where he was able to travel with a team to Puerto Rico for a missions trip.

When we asked Sam what he loved about UCSD he shared “I love the location, the people, and the academics.  The weather is always great and I can nearly walk to the beach to go surfing.  If you get involved, there are tons of fun and intelligent people to meet.  Plus there are a lot of fun places in San Diego, lots of people to meet, and plenty of companies to work for after graduation.  UCSD is a rigorous school and I've felt challenged throughout my whole career here.  It definitely isn't easy, but I feel well prepared for a career in engineering.”

Sam is currently a Technical Intern at Northrop Grumman. He told us that he loves the responsibility he’s given in the role. One of his first tasks as an intern was an individual project that he was trusted to complete on his own. Since that project’s successful completion, he’s been working as a manufacturing engineering intern designing tools for fabrication. One of the best things about working at Northrop Grumman is how they treat interns like full time employees, they respect and trust their interns and give them the tools to grow from the experience.

We loved working with Sam, and we are so excited that he’s attended a school he loved, and now has found an internship that will lead him to great things. Sam, we wish you all the best as you graduate and head into the workforce!

Three Tips to Decorate Your Dorm Room

When it comes to dorm rooms, I would say my freshman year was about as drab and ugly as they come. Beige brick walls, black linoleum floors, and generic wood furniture. But the plain-ness of dorm rooms gives you an opportunity to make it your own. Here are some things you might want to bring to help decorate your dorm room:

  1. Pictures, pictures, pictures! I had about 70 photos printed at Costco and brought them to my dorm room. My parents told me that 70 was way too many but I printed them all anyway because I wanted options. When I arrived at school my roommate had brought about 300 printed pictures (see Mom and Dad?, 70 wasn’t too many). Both my roommate and I put up photos all around the room with masking tape and they were nice reminders of friends, family, and more.

  2. Twinkly lights. Or Christmas lights, fairy lights, whatever you want to call them. They are fun looking but they also serve a functional purpose as well! Use them as a desk light at night or when getting ready in the morning when your roommate is sleeping; you’ll find a use for them. (Fun tip! Bring some colored lights to put up around the holiday time to make your room extra festive)

  3. Command products. Command hooks, strips, any product in general will be SO HELPFUL in decoration as well as organization of your room. I used command strips to hang decorated canvases, posters, and signs around my room. They are so easy to use and make clean up at the end of the year a breeze.
