Congratulations! You’re getting ready to move into your freshman year dorm! This is a very exciting time for you; here are a few tips to making the move in process a little bit smoother:
A doorstop! Pick up one of these and make sure it’s in a place you can easily access right when you get to your room. Being able to keep the door propped open will make trips to and from the car, the trash/recycling bins, etc. much easier.
Try to know the layout of your room before you get there. Most of the time you can find floor plans of the building online, if not on your school's website. Having an idea of how big your room is, where the window is, the closets, and more will be helpful so that deciding where you want your bed, desk, dresser, etc are not rushed decisions. Additionally, if any lofting of furniture needs to be done it’s good to know ahead of time in case you need tools.
Talk to your roommate beforehand. Try reaching out and asking general questions to get to know each other a bit before the beginning of the year.
You don't need to bring everything all at once. Depending on how far you are traveling for college you may feel like you have to move in all in one go. For me, going to a climate that actually had seasons, I left my snow boots and jacket at home and my parents brought them to me when they visited in November. Another option is mailing clothing/other items as the need (such as weather) arises for them.
Lastly, don’t stress. Everything will eventually find it’s place.
