Our Student Success Stories - Cami Campbell

Congratulations to our former student, Cami, who earned a B.A. in Elementary Education from Washington State University! Cami loved her experience there: "The College of Education provided me with endless opportunities to teach students within all grade levels. Without the dedication and support from each professor I would not have the confidence, nor the knowledge of current instructional practices as I begin my teaching career."

At College Bound Consulting, Cami worked with both Stephanie and Kristen through the college planning process. "My College Bound consultant helped immensely in building my confidence during my two years there. Stephanie and Kristen walked me through the entire application process. Stephanie also assisted me in preparation of the SAT. My scores improved greatly the second time I tested thanks to her assistance."

Next, Cami will be pursuing her M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction while obtaining her California Teaching Credential.

Making Friends in the Dorm

As school is starting up and you may be moving into your dorm, making friends can seem a bit daunting. My number one suggestion for meeting people/making friends in the dorm would be to leave your door open the first couple weeks of school. This is inviting other people to stop by and say hello. Additionally, most people the first few weeks of school will be just as nervous as you at making new friends. I had a door stop that my roommate and I used to keep our door open.

Another thing that was helpful in meeting people in the dorm was we had a white board that was on our door and we wrote something along the lines of "knock if you want a friend". And it actually worked! People would knock to say hi and get to know us. Something else that you can do would be to attend events that your hall or dorm puts on to meet people (at least in the beginning). I know hall meetings aren’t always the most fun but they’re informational and you may make some friends from it!! So just relax and don’t be nervous, everyone is nervous ;)

Other than getting some of the best flight training, I get to work alongside some of the best young men and women who are training with me. It's definitely humbling and amazing to meet people who are from all over the country and have different backgrounds and are here in flight training for the Navy and Marine Corps."

During his time at Texas A & M University in College Station, Texas, Eric was involved in Corps of Cadets, Ross Volunteer Company (Honor Guard for Governor of Texas), and Maroon Coats. Eric is thankful for the amount of service opportunities he was given through  the Ross Volunteers, the Corps, and Maroon Coats. Talking to Professors

Going to talk to your professors or GSIs (graduate student instructors, some schools have teachers assistants) can seem incredibly daunting. Remembering that professors and GSIs are human beings too can help you get through the process. You should never feel guilty or nervous about going to see a professor because teaching is their job and seeing students is also a part of that. Both professors and GSIs have office hours, a few hours during the week specifically for students to go and ask question or talk. If you can’t make these hours, email your professor/GSI and let them know, in my experience they are typically understanding of time conflicts and are willing to make other arrangements with you.

Also keep in mind that you can go talk to professors/GSIs about things other than the class you are currently in. Most professors like to get to know their students. Some things you could talk to them about would be their research (if applicable), your interest in the subject they are teaching, classes they may suggest for the future and more.

So remember: don’t feel intimated and get to know them! You’ll get to know an interesting person as well as get your questions answered about the class!

Top 5 Tips to Get the Most Out of Your Campus Visit

Taking a college tour can be overwhelming... here are some tips to focus on while you're looking at what could be your future!

1. Can you stay here a while?

Often times, internships and jobs come out of your college education and connections. If this is the case for you, can you stay in this city or area for a while after school? If not, maybe it's not the place for you.

2. Distance from home

Are you someone that likes to be at home? Someone who feels it's important to be home for all holidays? Someone who's trying to get as far away from home as possible? What ever the case is, know where you stand before you visit the campus. Check out where the local airport is and how you would get there if you didn't have your own car. If you're planning to drive back and forth from the campus, where is the parking and what is the drive like on a holiday weekend?

3. On campus activities

Are you interested in Greek life, intramural sports, or clubs? If so, where are those activities held, and who's involved? What are the options for on campus jobs? What do current students do on campus for fun? Is there a gym or a recreation center? Are there other food options besides the cafeteria on campus? Can you use your meal plan for those as well? What time do on campus buildings (gym, cafeteria, fields etc.) open and close during the day? Knowing how to eat, work-out, and participate on campus is critical to your success.

4. Surrounding area

Is it a city? Is it in the country? If it's the country, how close is the major city? Is there options for housing if you don't want to live on campus after your first year? Is that area safe? Do you need a car to get around? How close is a grocery store, or a Target, or even a hair salon or nail salon if these are things you're used to? Scope out the surrounding area to see if this is a community you could be rooted in.

5. Who's who and who's around?

What do the other students look like and act like? Do people say hello to each other? Are there notable professors and alumni that could help you with your future goals? Who's leading your tour? Who welcomed you to campus that day? These are all important things to evaluate as you're choosing which university is the best fit for you and your future plans.

Saying Goodbye

Whether it’s at your house, the airport, or your dorm room, the first true test of college is when you have to say goodbye to the people that you love and care about. It will start with acquaintances and end with your closest friends and family. For most, it will be the people that go to drop you off. That may be your parent(s), siblings, aunts, uncles, or grandparents,. Whomever it may be, saying goodbye for the first time in college is one of the first challenges to overcome.

For me, it was my parents and my brother that helped me move into school. When the time came to say our goodbyes, I’m not going to lie, it was tough. I’m here to tell you that it’s okay to cry (I did), it’s okay not to cry, it’s okay to feel scared, or excited, or not know what you feel! Know that it’s hard for everyone to say goodbye but you get to start your next great adventure. And while it may seem hard to say goodbye, remember anyone you need, your mom, siblings, or even your dog, is just a text, phone call, or facetime away (note: pets may need facetime assistance).

Our Student Success Stories - Erin Leonard

Erin

As a Poway High School graduate, Erin attended Texas Christian University from 2011-2012. After realizing she wanted to be closer to home, and in a smaller campus environment, Erin attended Point Loma Nazarene University and received her degree in Managerial and Organizational Communication. Erin realized her passion for learning, and completed PLNU's MBA Program in order to further her knowledge and education.

Throughout college, Erin participated in the TCU Chapter of Pi Beta Phi, and was the PLNU ASB Athletics and Student Spirit Coordinator.  Erin worked at SOS Entertainment for her sophomore, junior and senior years at PLNU. Erin recommends participating in an internship or corporate position while in school. She says that the experience you gain is critical, and you're able to bring real world situations back into the classroom.

Erin's fondest memory from PLNU was creating the All Black Event (ABE Event). Partnering with her roommate, the two were able to create an off campus event that hosted over 200 guests. The event was an artistic exhibit for sculpture, art, photography, food and drink and was complete with an original fashion show featuring two Loma students. Erin enjoyed her time at PLNU because of the freedom for creativity, small class sizes and close relationships with professors.

Currently, Erin is the owner of her own boutique marketing and branding consulting company in San Diego, CA. She loves working on her company as she has the freedom to travel and meet exciting new people!

Erin, we are so proud of your accomplishments, and loved working with you as a CBC student!
